Our subconscious is a portal

Our subconscious holds the key to deeper understanding and change, it is a portal for personal transformation

The Gateway Within

Sigmund Freud, who is considered the Father of Psychoanalysis, introduced the term the subconscious in the late 1800s to describe the part(s) of ourselves that were not directly accessible to our conscious, day-to-day ways of being and thinking.

As research and therapeutic methods developed the subconscious became a stronger focus of investigation as professionals became aware of how impactful the subconscious was on our lives.

So while our current systems, which directly and in-directly impact our lives, are almost hyper-focused on the conscious mind, it’s actually the subconscious that holds the key to deeper understanding and change.

Yep, I’m sorry to say. You aren’t as in control as you think you are.

The Subconscious Explained

In simple terms the subconscious is the reservoir of thoughts, emotions, memories, and experiences that are stored below our conscious awareness, these items in ‘storage’, directly impact our choices, behaviours, thoughts and emotional responses in the here and now.

Science estimates that 95 percent of our brain’s activity lies beyond conscious awareness. 95%! Which means, even if you think you’re in control, you’re not.

What does that mean?

For some of you, it will weigh heavily, with a sense related to a lose of control, maybe anxiety, hopelessness or helplessness and using this to valid your ‘what’s the point?’ energy.

For the rest of you (my kinda people), you’ll be excited, see the opportunity, have curiosity and start wondering ‘how can I dive in to this more’, or even where do I start?! To that I say, keep reading👇.

The Subconscious as a portal of infinite potential

I like to see the subconscious as a portal. A place that once inside has a whole world of discoveries, information and wisdom accessible to us. This portal frequently needs professional guidance to naviage successfully as it connects us to deeper layers of our psyche, intuition, and even universal consciousness, which can feel overwhelming, confronting, or just plain confusing if we aren’t experienced in navigating it.

The subconscious, although it can be the answer to many of our ‘problems’, isn’t just there as a way to ‘fix’ things. It also has the gifts of creativity, intuition, and inspiration. Along with holding records of our past and future lives, and even ways to connect with ancestral information. In short, it’s pretty powerful (which is why I call it a portal).

The role of hypnosis

Hypnosis offers a beautiful way in to connect and work with your subconscious. Hypnotherapy is one type of practice that works with a state of hypnosis.

Hypnosis: the trance state you are in that accesses your subconscious.
Hypnotherapy: the therapeutic tool that uses hypnosis as a way of treating mental, physical and emotional blockages and issues, or a way to gain insight and wisdom.

Within hypnotherapy there are multiple styles that support different areas of healing and development. More on this in a later post.

Working with a qualified hypnotherapist such as myself, can help you to access deeper wisdom, clarity and work through and change patterns, behaviours and other issues that are ultimately getting in the way of you living your best life, and being your most authentic self.

The subconscious, which is more like an undiscovered land, is not to be confused with the unconscious, which can be alikened to a black hole, where we quite simply don’t know what’s down there, and can’t easily find or navigate it.

The subconscious will often speak to us in little ways, such as through dreams, or through those small nudges where something just feels off, we may even have flashes of insight or memories come to us when we have been able to quiet our conscious mind enough. This is why meditation, reflection, therapeutic work and simply having no/low stimulus downtime can be so beneficial when it comes to accessing the portal of understanding ourselves, and gaining wisdom and clarity that we can then choose to integrate into our conscious minds.

The portal into our subconscious can be a profound and liberating journey of self-discovery and empowerment when accessed in a safe environment.

If you feel ready to jump in to access your own portal of transformation, I invite you to get in touch to discuss if hypnotherapy is right for you - hello@laurenwigmore.co.uk
